By TOM BRADYCNN September 17, 2018 – 09:30:50As the Port Authority of Milwaukee-Waukesha prepares to open its first streetcars in the Port’s new Milwaukee neighborhood, it’s finding the city’s transportation system is in desperate need of a thorough overhaul.
In the last few years, Milwaukee has been the city with the second-highest number of fatal traffic crashes per capita in the country, and the third-highest rate of pedestrian fatalities.
In the last five years, there have been at least 10,000 pedestrian deaths in the city, and about 60,000 crashes involving motor vehicles, according to a study by the city.
While there’s no one answer to fixing that, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has proposed a series of steps to improve the citys transportation system.
One of those is a streetcar line that would run from the port in Milwaukee to the West Side, where it would connect with the existing streetcar system at the Westin Hotel and the Westgate mall.
That would be the first phase of the proposed streetcar line from the Port to the downtown area.
It would be a new line, with no trains in Milwaukee.
The city’s first line would run along the North Side to the port, then turn north and head for Milwaukee’s industrial area.
This would connect the proposed line to a proposed streetcar system in Milwaukee and then back to the Port, Barrett said in a news conference Wednesday.
The plan also calls for a new transit line along the Lake Shore Drive corridor, which would connect to a planned light rail line at the Milwaukee Zoo.
The line would be part of a plan that has been in the works for years by Barrett, city officials and local officials in the area, including members of his advisory council.
That includes a $4.6 billion streetcar line and a $1.2 billion light rail extension.
The idea of a new streetcar project was a big step forward for Barrett, who is a former member of the National Transportation Safety Board, a federal agency charged with enforcing federal transportation safety laws.
The new streetcar would run under the Milwaukee River, at the foot of the former Milwaukee State Hospital, which has been closed for decades because of a lack of funding for transportation safety upgrades.
It would run alongside the West Gate Mall and would serve the area’s industrial and entertainment district.
It could even be run along West Milwaukee Avenue, which the city has been trying to re-route in recent years.
The proposed streetcar, which could cost up to $20 million, would connect directly to a new light rail system that is being planned in Milwaukee, Barrett told the news conference.
That plan would also have a link to the proposed light rail network, according in a memo sent to city officials last week.
It’s unclear how the new streetcar route would connect back to existing streetcar lines at the Port and Westgate, the new development, the Port said in the memo.
But the Port has identified several corridors that it thinks could make it easier for people to get around the city in the future.
The Port said that it expects to complete the streetcar project by early 2018.
The Milwaukee Port Authority has already completed several projects in recent months that included new light rails, new bus lanes, and a new streetcar and a bus station, Barrett and the city said.
The transit agency has been working on the streetcar route since 2016, but the project was delayed due to the city of Milwaukee’s fiscal year.
The streetcar line would have to be approved by the Milwaukee Port Commission before the project could be completed.
Barrett said the streetcar line has been a big priority for the city and for the Port.
But he said it’s important to keep the process moving forward.
The streetcar line could have a major impact on the Port in the near term, he said.
But, the project has to be built, he added.
