Disney has long said that it doesn’t intend to use a live-action Frozen film in its new animated sequel.
The Walt Disney Company, which made the popular fairy tale film, has always said that its films are more like live-Action TV shows, which means that it will not be making an animated version of the beloved film, even though it is technically the property of the Walt Disney Co.
The animated version was one of the biggest hits in recent years, grossing $3.9 billion worldwide and winning six Academy Awards.
It had an estimated $8 billion production budget.
But this time around, Disney is going all-out in the Frozen franchise.
Disney announced a live action Frozen remake will be coming to theaters in 2020, with an estimated budget of $65 million.
“The Frozen franchise has been at the forefront of the creative imagination of generations, and it’s only fitting that it comes to life with a Frozen reboot,” said Bob Iger, chairman and chief executive officer of Disney, in a statement.
“We are confident that our Frozen fans will love this new version of Frozen, which we hope will be a huge hit for Disney.”
This is the first time that a live animated version has been used in a Disney film.
In 2017, Disney’s Oscar-winning animated film Beauty and the Beast won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, despite featuring a live studio audience.
Disney CEO Bob Igers said the company will continue to use the Frozen brand as a theme park attraction.
“We have an obligation to our fans, our partners and our guests to continue to tell the story that has brought them together in such wonderful ways over so many decades,” Igers told reporters at the D23 Expo in Los Angeles on Thursday.
The studio has also said that there will be no live action film version of Beauty and The Beast in 2020.
Iger said that was because he and his team “really wanted to make sure we didn’t do that at all.”
Iger has said previously that Disney is planning to make more films this year.
Iger also said the Frozen film is not on the company’s list of films that will be released in theaters in 2018.
The studio has not yet released a new Frozen movie, which is set to arrive in theaters on November 21, 2020.
