The Canberra Government has launched a new research project to improve the use of active transport diagrams, a set of rules that help planners determine where to construct roads and other infrastructure.
Key points:The research group, which was set up by the Canberra Government, aims to build a map of traffic on the city’s roads, roads and waterwaysThe study, funded by the Federal Government and the Australian Council of Civil Engineers, will look at the use and misuse of active travel diagrams in CanberraThe project will involve analysing more than 20,000 kilometres of active road and road-related data in Canberra, from the State Government’s Roads and Maritime Services to Canberra’s Regional Transport Hubs.
It will look into whether there are more efficient ways of using the map, and if it can be used to improve road planning.
The project aims to address a number of issues around road design and construction, including the need to provide a better picture of the local environment.
“We think that the use-based data is a very powerful tool for planners,” Professor Tom Wilson, a traffic engineer with the Roads and Transport Research Institute, said.
“The best way to make good decisions is to get a good understanding of the environment around you.”‘
We’re getting it right’The team will use the map to build the Canberra Regional Transport Initiative, a toolset that includes active travel routes and road metrics to determine the most efficient way of delivering infrastructure.
“There are a number factors that affect how roads are designed and how the roads are constructed, and so we’re getting a better understanding of what’s going on and where things are going wrong,” Professor Wilson said.
The tool, which is being developed by the University of Canberra and the Federal Environment Department, will help planners assess where roads are needed and how to improve those decisions.
The team is also developing a tool to analyse the data, to identify potential gaps in the way active travel is used in Canberra.
“This tool will help us understand what’s happening around us, where the roads and the infrastructure are located and how we can do better,” Professor Woodman said.
Professor Wilson said that the project will help to improve Canberra’s infrastructure and that it could help reduce congestion in the city.
“It’s very clear that Canberra needs to be a lot smarter in its planning, but in the past it’s had a very low level of planning,” he said.
