Transport and logistics firms are using the Google Maps API to make it easier for drivers to switch off automatic mode.
1 / 6 Transport and logistical firms are currently using the Android app to enable automated mode on Android Maps 1 / 7 The Google Maps service on Google’s Maps app lets users navigate the world by driving and searching by voice, using their phone as a map.
Transport and transportation firms are taking advantage of the API to enable the driverless cars that Google is developing to deliver goods and services by having Google Maps open for driverless traffic.
The API allows the user to turn off the automatic mode by pressing the “auto” button on the Google Map interface, but Google says drivers can still use voice commands to enable and disable it.
Transport companies are using Google Maps as a tool to automate driving and the drivers use the API for that purpose, according to a blog post by Google’s product manager.
“In this case, a user will ask for the automatic traffic mode by sending a command to Google Maps, and the Google map will display a traffic map with the auto mode enabled,” the blog post reads.
Google says it is looking into the issue.
Transport firms are not the only ones using Google to make this possible.
Transport industry body RAC told Engadgets that its members are using this technology for its own purposes.
“We’re using Google as a way to make sure the driver can use the map,” said Peter Juhl, the director of RAC’s transport policy, in an email to Engadges.
“This will help ensure that drivers can use Google Maps to find the closest car to their destination, so they can get home safely.”
Google says Google Maps is an open source project and is not owned or controlled by Google.
Google declined to comment on this story.
Transport groups say that the API is critical to ensuring safety in autonomous vehicles.
“There are many scenarios where Google Maps has to be used for that and we are constantly working to ensure that we are doing that as safely as possible,” said Jonathan Wark, director of public policy at the Transport Association, in a blog article.
“The Google Maps infrastructure is being used by transport firms to enable driverless vehicles to deliver their services and deliver goods.”
Transport associations are also using the API as a new way to reduce congestion in London, which has been plagued by traffic jams caused by drivers using the services of Uber and Lyft.
Uber and UberX drivers are also taking advantage.
Uber has made a number of changes to the way it operates, and has made the API an integral part of its service.
Uber is also testing autonomous vehicles for the London Underground, and will use the APIs for that as well.
Uber said it will roll out the service in London in the second half of 2018.
