When is the best time to drive a car?
That’s a big question, says Steven S. Steves, a professor of transportation at Duke University and author of the forthcoming book “Active Transport requires a car: A guide to the future.”
Here’s how it works.
Car insurance is a big factor.
Car insurers, he says, tend to steer clear of active transportation because they don’t want to be involved in collisions and because their primary focus is on maintaining a safe environment for motorists.
“If you have a collision in your car, you can’t just walk away and go home,” Steves says.
“You have to get involved.
That means you have to be actively driving.”
The biggest obstacle is that most drivers aren’t equipped with insurance, he adds.
“Most people don’t have enough cash to pay for a collision insurance policy,” Steve says.
The best insurance for most drivers isn’t available at the dealership, he notes.
“And there’s always the issue of cost.

So, if you’re a very young driver who has never had a collision, and your insurance company has paid you a premium for that accident, and it’s only $20,000, that’s not going to cover you.”

They might think, “This car is not worth $20 million,” Steaves says.
In reality, a vehicle is worth more than $100,000 if it’s worth its weight in gold, Steves adds.
A high-end car is worth even more, he points out.
“But most people don.
The average car is going to cost about $50,000 to $60,000.”
Steves’ book also includes some suggestions on how to avoid accidents and to be safe.
The most important thing, he suggests, is to use a GPS device.
“Don’t take the car for granted,” Steades says.
You can’t always avoid a collision.
“It’s part of the process of learning how to drive safely,” he adds, noting that it’s also helpful to know how to steer a car safely.
“In order to make sure that you don’t do that, you should have some basic knowledge of what’s going on.”
The book will be released Sept. 29.
Steaves is also speaking at a trade show in Seattle later this month, where he’ll offer his take on active transportation.
